If you bid on a car that is located out of state there is no way you can do this unless you are willing to buy a plane ticket. You can also ask the seller to take pictures of all the car parts with the vin number on it. Then you can make sure they match and run a CARFAX report on the car to see if it was in a major accident fire or flood.
So the main risk of buy a car at an online auction is not being able to see it in person. You have no way of knowing your getting a great running car or a clunker this way. However you can solve this problem by only bidding on cars in or near you city and asking for pictures of various parts of the car.
